Review: Tere Mere Phere

Review: Tere Mere Phere

Though comedy has grown into a lush genre over the years, few directors in India have mastered the art of relaying it on celluloid. Tere Mere Phere is an earnest endeavour by actress turned director Deepa Sahi.

Tere Mere Phere is not only a romantic comedy, it is a black comedy, slapstick comedy, satire, comedy of manners, screwball comedy -- all rolled in one. Deepa's attempt to weave in every sub-genre of comedy is probably the nemesis of the movie.

The premise of this film is about compatibility in a marriage. The story revolves around two couples - Rahul and Pooja (Jagrat Desai and Sasha Goradia) and Jai and Muskaan (Vinay Pathak and Riya Sen). Their lives get intertwined by fate.

A squabbling Rahul and Pooja are on their way to Shimla by flight. They are on the verge of splitting after three days of honeymooning in a motor home, travelling in Himachal.

But the aborted landing of their aircraft takes them back to their incomplete honeymoon with Jai for company. Jai is desperate to meet his sweetheart Muskaan, who would be forcibly married by her brother to some other bloke.

The narration slips in and out of numerous cantankerous moments of flashbacks to reveal to a lovelorn Jai as to why they (Rahul and Pooja) are bickering all the time. By the end of it, Jai is convinced, by watching Rahul and Pooja, that familiarity breeds contempt.

He decides that marriage is not for him. He makes a decision to desert his waiting Muskaan. Roles reverse with the climax culminating at the hilarious fast forward wedding of Jai and Muskaan.

The scuffle in the aircraft cabin with force fed humour sets the tone of the film for a mediocre fare. The scenes that follow seem substandard and clumsy. With no detailing done, the characters seem to be shallow.

The plot has no major inciting moments and with screechy loud dialogues like - Tum kya Eskimo thi?, Tum kya chipkali ho? and "You are queen of Main Main", No you are king of che chee. The script along with the dialogues seems to be the weakest point of the film.

The film belongs to the newcomers Jagat Desai and Sasha Goradia. For first timers, they exude confidence. Sushmita Mukherjee as Rahul's overbearing mother is convincing. Riya Sen with a naturally poker face and sing song expressionless dialogue delivery is a bad choice for a comedy film.

Vinay Patak is wasted as he hardly has anything to do in the film.

On the other hand, the verdant Himalayan terrain is beautifully captured by cinematographer Christo Bakalov. The film has been shot in beautiful and unusual parts of Himachal, especially in the newly opened Kinnaur Valley. The climax of the film has been shot at Hatu Peak and Jhamunda (near Tethys Resort, Narkanda).

The music by Shivangi R. Kashyap is nothing to write home about.

The first half of the film is just tolerable. The second half has its moments of extreme comedy. The end is equally disappointing leaving the viewers wondering as to why you wanted to witness this meaningless marriage.

Mahindra & Mahindra rolls out first Global SUV XUV 500 at Rs 10.8 lakh

Mahindra & Mahindra Limited LogoImage via WikipediaMahindra & Mahindra rolls out first Global SUV XUV 500 at Rs 10.8 lakh

MUMBAI/PUNE: When Anand Mahindra launched the much-awaited XUV 500 Wednesday evening, the vice chairman & managing director of Mahindra & Mahindra invited those present to guess the price of the feature-packed sports utility vehicle. The estimates that flew around amidst the glitz were mostly on the higher side of Rs 13 lakh.

Few expected the jaw-dropping price range that was announced 12 hours later: Rs 10.8 lakh (ex-Delhi) for the base version, and Rs 12.88 lakh for the fully-loaded top-end XUV 500 with all-wheel drive.

"Mahindra has hit the sweet spot," proclaimed Hormazd Sorabjee, editor of Autocar India, citing the vehicle's aggressive styling, interior space, price and super premium features such as touch-screen multimedia system and rain-sensing wipers besides all the modern safety features including six airbags.

The XUV 500 may well make the going extremely tough for Tata Motors' crossover Tata Aria, which is priced higher but lags behind in features, and may impact top-end Scorpio and even premium off-roaders such as Ford Endeavour.

It looks an ideal vehicle for India's largest utility vehicle maker's global ambitions. "The XUV 500 will get us the high seat in global auto world. It is a strong and bold step towards becoming a globally recognized SUV brand," Anand Mahindra told ET on the sidelines of a press conference in Pune.

The company will launch the vehicle in South Africa in a couple of days. It plans to make inroads into Australia and Latin America in the next six months. M&M will also drive the XUV 500 into Western Europe, Russia and China where it has no presence.

Pawan Goenka, president, automotive and farm equipment sector, M&M said he would be disappointed if the company does not achieve at least 20% of total production for the exports market.

M&M aims to export XUV 500 to over 30 countries in the next couple of years. It also plans assembly of the vehicle at its subsidiary Ssangyong's plants in South Korea and Brazil.

Adil Jal Darukhanawala, editor in chief of Zig Wheels, said the state-of-the-art offering should do well overseas. Other experts such as Ernst & Young's automotive sector national leader Rakesh Batra and Autocar's Sorabjee, however, said the XUV does not meet global standards, but will generate demand in India.

M&M will begin bookings for the XUV 500 in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai and Pune on Saturday. It will be rolled out across the country in 6-9 months.

It is the second launch in three days after Honda Brio small car as carmakers bet on new vehicles and discounts to revive the Indian car market, where sales fell for two consecutive months in July and August.

The XUV 500 helps M&M enter the premium SUV market. It confirms to Europe crash regulations and is equipped with a host of safety features like ABS, EBD, ESP and six airbags. It is loaded with more features than even premium sports utility vehicles like Chevrolet Captiva, Ford Endeavour and Toyota Fortuner.

Yet it was developed with an investment of 650 crore, which is 10% lower than development cost in the past, said people involved with the project.

Despite the aggressive price tag, Anand Mahindra said it has not compromised on margins. "For M&M the bottomline always comes first and our focus will remain the same," he said.

Industry experts say that its monocoque frame construction makes the vehicle lighter and cheaper to produce than Tata Aria, which is built ladder-on-frame construction. Check out Brand Equity's Most Trusted Brands List 2011

Force: Movie Review

Force: Movie Review
Force.jpg
Force , more or less, is an offshoot of the success of Ghajini with a similar structure of a hardcore action film intersected with a lighthearted love story running in flashback plus a 6-pack-abs hero, a blabbermouth heroine, a love-song in desert and a gory climax. Also its remake of a Tamil film ( Kaakha Kaakha ) starring the same actor ( Suriya) from the original Ghajini . Incidentally down South, Ghajini (2005) was an offshoot of the success of Kaakha Kaakha (2003).

Beyond being a remake, Force has a regular revenge drama plotline where the hero (John Abraham) kills villain's brother and the villain (Vidyut Jamwal) is out to get the hero and his family (Genelia D'Souza). This one-liner summarizes the soul of the film. Why Force still has that impact is because of its seething spirit and electrifying energy that the director brings to the proceedings, while never letting it go overboard esp. when there is a strong tendency with the genre. Accepted that the action is heavy-duty, the villain is vicious and together when this lethal combo deracinates the hero, it gets cinematically depressing at times. But these extremities lend the film its individuality. So despite having a refreshing romance track too, Force isn't exactly for the fainthearted!

The film isn't exactly designed as a realistic cinema that exposes the functioning of the drug trade. The narcotics backdrop is employed to give John Abraham and his team more defined characterization as cops. So the modus operandi of the drug mafia is rushed through rapid yet convincing montages. The story is pretty much predictable but the storytelling is swift enough to not let you notice the loose ends and smart enough to keep you riveted.

The love story between John and Genelia, though not out of the box, is sublime and sparkling enough. Since John carries a no-nonsense attitude, much of the effervescence can be attributed to Genelia who is charming in her chirpy character. Their romance has a steady buildup because the charisma in their chemistry is directly proportional to the viciousness that follows in the vengeance in the second half.

The action is raw and involves more physical combats. Action director Allan Amin choreographs the stunt sequences with the requisite vigour and esp. noteworthy is the extensive chase sequence when John and Vidyut come face-to-face for the first time. But more than the action, it's the vindictiveness of the villain that scares you more. The second half almost works like a horror film with the viewer anticipating with fear on how would the evil strike next. There is a continual sense of looming danger.

For an action film, Force has some really well-written dialogues. The lines have genuine impact and aren't blatantly jingoistic to win mass-appeal like in most recent actioners. The director cuts off melodrama and tries to bring subtlety to a full-blown action film. Also he tries to strike a balance between the love story and the revenge drama. While at the outset one feels to have lost director Nishikant Kamat, who gave us sensitive and sensible masterpieces in the form of Mumbai Meri Jaan and Dombivli Fast , to masala movies, he still manages to keep Force a level higher than the formulaic Singham or the desi Dabangg .

John Abraham looks cool and convincing in the role of a cold-blooded cop. Force exploits his brawny physique to the best and gives him ample scope to play a full-fledged action role without being blatant about it. While Genelia is bubbly as always, she thankfully doesn't go overboard in her chatterbox character this time. She is at her graceful best. Vidyut Jamwal makes a confident debut as the menacing villain and adds venom to his cruel character. He is amazing in the action sequences and spiteful as the insensitive killer. Mohnish Behl gets a strong supporting role after ages and does absolute justice to it. Sandhya Mridul is decent. Anaitha Nair is wasted. Raj Babbar gets no scope

I don't miss being married: Lata Mangeshkar

Indian singer Lata MangeshkarImage via WikipediaI don't miss being married: Lata Mangeshkar

Last few weeks Lata Mangeshkar has been a little caught up. Having wrapped up the Ganpati puja at her Peddar Road residence, the melody queen says there are no special plans for her 82nd birthday today. "I never plan, kyonki jo hona hai wohi hota hai," she smiles. But the evening will see the legendary singer being honoured with the newly instituted `Hridaynath award' for Lifetime Achievement by Amitabh Bachchan. Thereafter she is off to Pune for her usual holiday. Exceprts of an interview...

You are the first recipient of the award that's instituted in your brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar's name
I am proud to accept this award. He is my guru though he is younger to me. I am very proud of him and my other siblings. Yeh bachche mere saamne bade huwe hai aur gaurav ki baat yeh hai ki kisine apne bure waqt pe ya apne mukaam pohochne mei mere madad nahin li. Even though our mother brought them up unke parvarish pe thoda bahut haath mera bhi hai. They are like my children.

In hindsight, what has been the one most enriching and regretting factor in your life respectively?
I am most happy and at ease when I sing. As for regrets, I have none, because whatever God gives it's meant for you and whatever you miss was never for you. I am only thankful to God.

Is there any sense of loneliness that you feel sometimes?
Kabhi kabhi mei ek khaalipan mehsoos karti hun. All my friends are gone..so are the golden days!

Are you in constant touch with friends from the industry?
Nargis and Meena Kumar were my close friends. We used to be in touch regularly till they passed away. Dev Anand is another person who I am in touch with. Otherwise from this generation, Anu Malik often calls me to chat. I am also close to Aamir Khan, Shankar Mahadevan, Hariharan and Sonu Nigam.

Why do you always holiday in Pune and London?
You forgot Kolhapur. I have a house there too. I often run away to these places when I want to escape Mumbai's cacophony. These places have different and lovely memories for me. But for the last few years I have stopped going to London for personal reasons.

Other than music, what else are you involved in?
Photography. I love clicking pictures. I also love cooking. Everyone loves my gaajar ka halwaa and pasanda. I also prefer sitting in my room and reading. Books are a different world I would like to get lost into.

So have you clicked any new pictures?
Nowadays, I have stopped clicking pictures because I do not understand the functioning of a digital camera which is in vogue. Mujhe acche nahin lagte. I love black and white
pictures.

But you can still click with your old camera?
I have sold all of them because they are hardly in use these days. I don't think anyone values that kind of camera anymore.

Among the sisters who are you closest to ?
I have no favourites and I love all three of them. We share everything like all regular
siblings.

So what about the famous Lata-Asha rivalry?
Aisa kuch nahin hai. Jyadaatar woh sab aafwae the. Yes, we were different in nature. I was the quiet type whereas she was the restless and on edge kind. Badi himmat hai yeh ladki mein. She's a versatile singer and a legend in her own way. But we are sisters and quite close. She comes and sits with me and shares everything. We have one door in our house. My bedroom door opens to Asha's room.

Lastly Lataji, like every girl who grows up with dreams of marriage, do you miss being married?
No. Everything happens according to God's wish. Jo hote hai acche ke liye hote hai aur jo nahin hote who aur acche ke liye hote hai. Had you asked me this about four to five decades back, perhaps you would have got a different answer. But today I have no room for such thoughts.

Shahrukh Khan is worried about ‘Ra.One’

Indian actor Shahrukh Khan, arrival for press ...Image via WikipediaAsk him whether he is scared about his sci-fi thriller Ra.One, and the superstar will say, he is not scared but worried about the movie’s reception. Shahrukh Khan hopes and prays people like and enjoy Ra.One.

Ra.One will hit the theatres this Diwali on October 26, and as the release date is moving closer, the badshah Khan is having sleepless nights. Recently at a press meet, when he was asked about the fate of his film, Shahrukh said, “I don’t fear... if I am scared then I won’t be able to do films... or say act or produce films. Those who fear will not be able to work. I am not scared but I am worried. I just hope everyone likes and enjoys the film.”

Later he added, “I am not scared to act...I am not scared to make movies as I was born to do that. There is a worry, but I do not fear.”

Obviously, he is a fearless Khan, otherwise who could have ever imagined producing a film on such a big scale and introducing an Indian superhero who doesn’t wear a mask.

According to Shahrukh, Ra.One is the modern, new age technology version of our mythological “Raavan”, who was a mixture of ten different evil characters. Shahrukh is essaying the role of G.One or better say “Jeevan”, a superhero who saves the mankind from Ra.One’s torment. Through this film, Khan wants to prove that Indian superheroes can also be as cool as the international ones.
