iPad 2 users are raving about the speed and agility of the A5 chip, and iPhone users are excited about the prospects of an A5-equipped iPhone 5. But new rumors suggest that a bigger, better A6 chip is coming to the iPhone 6 in 2012.
Apple has been diligent in continuing to beef up its mobile processing power, rolling out the famed A5 chip in 2011, debuting on theiPad 2. Given the impressive performance of the iPad 2 to date, iPhone users are excited to experience the A5 chip, together with iOS 5, in the new iPhone 5, which is rumored to debut in the Fall of 2011.
But for as much as iPhone users have yet to taste the A5 chip on the iPhone 5 yet, new reports show that an A6 chip is in the works, and will most definitely make its way on a 2012-released iPhone 6.
PocketNow is reporting that “According to Dan Heyler, a semiconductor analyst with Merrill Lynch in Taipei, quoted by the Chinese-language Commercial Times, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC) has a great chance of ‘winning orders for Apple’s A6 processors,’” and that “Samsung will reportedly continue to deliver Apple’s A5 chips and thus TSMC will not get any orders in 2011 but, if the rumors turn out to be true, the A6 chip to be used in the next iPhone after the unannounced iPhone to come will not be made by Samsung anymore.”
We still do not know how the A6 chip will stack up against the A5 in terms of performance. but given the prospect of the iPhone 6 being the first iPhone that is 4G equipped, together with a possible new iOS 6 operating system, enhanced gesture control, 3D capabilities, and other possible innovations slated for the iPhone 6, it would be safe to assume that the A6 processor will be a vital aspect of pushing forward whatever new features Apple has in store for its sixth generation, 2012-released iPhone.
