‘Endhiran is technically India’s best’(எந்திரன்… கதை நடப்பது நிகழ் காலத்திலா எதிர்காலத்திலா? சாபு சிரில் ருசிகர தகவல்கள்!!)

எந்திரனின் முக்கிய தூண்களில் ஒருவர் – படத்தின் ஆர்ட் டைரக்டர் சாபு சிரில். டைம்ஸ் ஆப் இந்தியா நாளிதழுக்கு இவர் அளித்துள்ள சிறிய பேட்டி ஒன்றில் நம்மை ஏமாற்றாது பல விபரங்களை தந்திருக்கிறார் சாபு.

பேட்டியின் தமிழாக்கம்…

இந்தியத் திரையுலகில் பரபரப்பான ஆர்ட் டைரக்டராகியுள்ளார் சாபு சிரில். இருக்காதா பின்னே… எந்திரனுக்கு வடிவம் கொடுத்தது அவர் தானே?

சூப்பர் ஸ்டார் ரஜினி முதல் ஷாருக்கான் வரை பலரின் பாராட்டுக்களை தனது கைவண்ணத்திற்காக பெற்றவர் இவர். Ra.One, Aakrosh, Tees Maar Khan & Bullet Train போன்ற படங்களுக்கு தற்போது இவர் ஆர்ட் டைரக்டராக பணிபுரிகிறார்.

எந்திரன் எப்படி உருவானது…
பத்து ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு இயக்குனர் ஷங்கர் என்னை ரோபோ படத்திற்காக சந்தித்தார். அப்போது அதில் கமல் நடிப்பதாக இருந்தது. கிட்டத்தட்ட படத்தின் முழு ஸ்க்ரிப்ட்டையும் ஷங்கர் ஒரு புத்தகம் போல பைண்ட் செய்தே கொண்டுவந்திருந்தார். அந்தளவு அனைத்தும் பக்காவாக இருந்தது. மூன்று ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு, மறுபடியும் ரோபோவுக்காக ஷங்கர் சந்தித்தார். இம்முறை, அதில் ரஜினி நடிக்கவிருப்பதாக கூறினார். ரஜினியின் இமேஜுக்கு ஏற்றவாறு ஸ்க்ரிப்ட்டில் தேவையான சில மாற்றங்களை செய்துள்ளார். தவிர, தாராளமாக செலவு செய்ய சன் பிக்சர்ஸ் போன்ற பலம் படைத்த தயாரிப்பாளர் கிடைத்ததையடுத்து அதற்க்கும் ஏற்றார்போல மாற்றங்கள் செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது.

ரோபோவை தயார் செய்வது சவாலாக இருந்திருக்குமே?
ஆம். ஹாலிவுட்டில் உள்ள பல முன்னணி ஸ்பெஷல் எபக்ட்ஸ் ஸ்டூடியோக்களுக்கு நேரில் சென்று, அனிமேஷன் தொழில்நுட்பம் பற்றி தெரிந்துகொண்டேன். அது எனக்கு நிறைய நம்பிக்கை கொடுத்தது. உள்நாட்டிலேயே இந்த படத்தை தயாரிக்க முடியும் என்ற நம்பிக்கை ஏற்பட்டது. ஜூராசிக் பார்க் மற்றும் அயன் மேன் உள்ளிட்ட பல ஸ்பெஷல் எபக்ட் படங்களுக்கு கிராபிக்ஸ் செய்த ஸ்டூடியோ ஒன்றில் பல மாதங்கள் தங்கியிருந்து பல விஷயங்களை தெரிந்துகொண்டேன். கடுமையான ஹோம் வொர்க் செய்தேன்.

இதன் மூலம், எந்திரனுக்காக ஹை-டெக் செட்டிங்குகள், ஹெலிகாப்டர்கள், டாங்கிகள், தவிர பல நவீன தளவாடங்களை தயார் செய்தோம். இதுவரை நான் சந்தித்த பணிகளிலேயே மிகவும் சவாலானவை இவை. படத்தின் ஒவ்வொரு காட்சியும் மிகுந்த கவனத்துடன் செதுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

எந்திரன் எப்படி வந்துள்ளது?
எந்திரன் தொழில்நுட்ப ரீதியில் இந்தியாவின் மிகச் சிறந்த படம் என்பதில் சந்தேகமில்லை. படத்தின் சில பகுதிகளை போஸ்ட் ப்ரொடக்ஷன் பணிகளின்போது நான் பார்த்திருக்கிறேன். நேர்த்தியான திரைக்கதையும், ஷங்கரின் கச்சிதமான கதையும் தான் படத்தின் முதுகெலும்பு. இவற்றுடன் விஞ்ஞானியாகவும், ரோபோவாகவும் தூள் கிளப்பியிருக்கும் ரஜினியின் அற்புதமான பெர்பாமன்ஸ். இதற்க்கு மேல் வேறு என்ன வேண்டும்?

ஷங்கர் படங்களுக்கேயுரிய பிரம்மாண்டமும், பொழுதுபோக்கு அம்சங்களும், இவற்றுடன் ஏ.ஆர்.ரஹ்மானின் அட்டகாசமான பாடல்களும் உள்ளன. இவை நிச்சயம் எல்லா தரப்பு மக்களையும் மகிழ்ச்சியில் ஆழ்த்தும் என்பதில் ஐயமில்லை. நான்கு பாடல்களுக்கு செட்டிங்குகள் போடப்பட்டன. அவை உங்கள் கண்களுக்கு ஒரு மாபெரும் விருந்து என்பதில் சந்தேகமில்லை. படத்தின் காட்சியைப்புக்கள், அதன் பிரம்மாண்ட பட்ஜெட்டை நியாப்படுத்தும் என்பதை படத்தை பார்க்கும்போது நீங்களே புரிந்துகொள்வீர்கள்.

எந்திரனுக்கு மற்றும் நீங்கள் பணிபுரியும் பிற Sci-Fi படங்களுக்கு என்ன வித்தியாசம்? எந்திரனின் தனித்தன்மை என்ன?

எந்திரனுக்கும் மற்ற Sci-Fi படங்களுக்கும் நிறைய வித்தியாசம் உண்டு. எந்திரனின் கதை நிகழ்காலத்தில் நடப்பது போல வடிவமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. ஆனால் Ra.One. ஒரு கனவுலகத்தில் எதிர்காலத்தில் நடைபெறுவது போல இருக்கும்.

Superstar Rajinikanth and King Khan are all praise for his work for their sci-fi films Endhiran (The Robot) and Ra.One. Sabu, who is doing four Bollywood biggies (Ra.One, Aakrosh, Tees Maar Khan and Bullet Train) at the moment, speaks exclusively to TOI on his dream project Endhiran…

Tell us about how Endhiran evolved…
Shankar first approached me 10 years ago to make ‘Robot’ with Kamal Haasan in the lead. Shankar came with a bound script then but it did not work out due to budget constraints and was put on the backburner. Three years ago, he came back and told me that he was reviving the film with Rajinikanth as hero. He had made suitable changes in the script, keeping Rajini sir’s image in mind and got a producer like Kalanidhi Maran, who could spend big money on it.

You seem to have a liking for sci-fi movies…
During my school and college days, I have watched every sci-fi movie from Hollywood. In early 90s, I did a Tamil serial for Doordarshan in which the central character was a robotic dog that I made for Rs 5, 000, a huge amount in those days. The serial clicked because the dog looked realistic. Later, I made a shark for a Malayalam film.

How difficult was it to create the Robot and sets of the film?
I visited all the major special effects studios in Hollywood. That gave me the confidence that we could make the Robot with its mechanical movements in India. For a couple of months, I was in LA at the studio where they created Jurassic Park and Iron Man. We created more than 35 sets, including hi-tech sets, helicopters, Armed Personnel Carrier and a few other futuristic gadgets. It was the most challenging job that I’ve ever taken up. Every scene in the film has been taken with great care.

How do you think Endhiran has shaped out?
Technically, it is the best film ever made in India. I have watched parts of the film during post production work and I feel the screenplay and Shankar’s script are the backbone, along with Rajinikanth’s awesome performance in a dual role as the scientist and the Robot (who is a humanoid). The film, like all Shankar films, has been made like an extravagant entertainer with mind-blowing songs by A R Rahman and will appeal to all sections of the audience. We have created sets for four songs, which will be a visual treat. The huge budget spent for the film will be justified when you watch it on the screen.

What is the difference between Endhiran and Ra.One, both sci-fi films?
They are in different genres of sci-fi. The story of Endhiran is set in the present-day world, while Ra.One belongs to the virtual reality world.
